MDU Fiber Upgrade: Which Tii Enclosures Go Where
Quick answer: a typical MDU fiber upgrade uses four Tii enclosure stages: (1) a building entrance point where the feeder arrives, using FET2 or FET3 entrance terminals, FDT1/FDT2 outdoor distribution terminals on the building exterior, or FDH1/FDH2 and HCCH wall-mount distribution hubs for larger properties; (2) floor or wing distribution hubs in riser closets using the FET4 platform; (3) per-unit demarcation with reeled pre-connectorized fiber (506R) or fixed enclosures (506F/508F); and (4) a CCP Family wall terminal at each unit’s ONT.
Brownfield MDU upgrades, apartment buildings, condos, and mixed-use properties being converted from copper or coax to fiber, are among the most common projects in BEAD-funded and other broadband expansion programs. The layout below maps Tii products to each stage of the building; every product links to full specifications and part-number builders.
Stage 1: Building entrance
The feeder or distribution cable from the OSP network lands at a weatherproof, re-enterable enclosure where it is spliced or patched toward the building’s internal plant. For small and mid-size MDUs, the FET2 (up to 16F) and FET3 (up to 48F) entrance terminals are purpose-built: NEMA-4 rated, wall or pole mount, patch-and-splice, with the FET3 adding integrated PON splitter options (1×4, 1×8, 1×16). Where the entrance point sits on the building exterior, the FDT1 (4-plate) and FDT2 (12-plate) outdoor distribution terminals (NEMA-4, dual lockable compartments, up to 144 terminations) serve as the weatherproof entrance and distribution point. For larger properties where splitting and cross-connect happen at the building, step up to a wall-mount fiber distribution hub: the FDH1 (12 to 96 distribution ports) or FDH2 (72 to 288 ports), or the cassette-based HCCH (up to 144 drops). Stage 2: Floor and wing distribution
In riser closets or utility spaces, a compact hub splits and patches toward the units on each floor or wing. The FET4S (12.7″ x 12.5″ x 7.1″, NEMA-4, modular cassettes, 8/12/24/32-port configurations, PLC9 splitter modules supporting 1×4 through 1×32 split ratios) is the fit here. For garden-style and multi-building campuses where distribution runs between buildings outdoors, the FDT Series terminals provide the weatherproof mid-span point.
Stage 3: Per-unit demarcation
Each unit gets a demarcation enclosure where provider fiber hands off to the customer drop. For the fastest MDU installs, the 506R reeled fiber dispenser is the MDU-designated choice: preloaded with up to 125 ft of pre-connectorized Peelable MicroDrop fiber on a rotating reel, dispensed to length at each unit with no field connectorization (2 fusion splice capacity; 8.48″ x 9.94″ x 2.50″). Fixed alternatives: the 506F (up to 12 adapters, 50 ft slack storage), the 508F (NEMA-4/IP-66, rigid drops to 3″ bend radius), and the 507F where conduit termination top and bottom is required. Compare the full family in the FISS comparison guide.
Stage 4: In-unit ONT access
Inside each unit, the drop terminates at a CCP Series wall terminal, the ONT access point. The CCP7 suits both brownfield and greenfield installation, includes two fusion splice slots and minimal slack storage, and offers an optional ONT mount plate (CCP7-ONT); the CCP5 and CCPW1 provide wallplate form factors; the CCP1 adds a splice tray for greenfield pulls. The in-unit run itself uses Peelable MicroDrop cable (the jacket peels to expose a clear 900-micron subunit for near-invisible routing) and the peel-and-stick Fiber Pathway System for corridors and baseboard runs.

Frequently asked questions
What Tii products are used in an MDU fiber upgrade?
Four stages: FET2/FET3 entrance terminals, FDT1/FDT2 outdoor distribution terminals, or FDH1/FDH2/HCCH wall-mount distribution hubs at the building entrance; the FET4S 48-fiber hub for floor distribution; 506R reeled dispensers (or 506F/508F enclosures) for per-unit demarcation; and CCP wall terminals with MicroDrop cable at each ONT.
What makes the 506R suited to MDU installs?
It ships preloaded with up to 125 ft pre-connectorized MicroDrop fiber on a rotating reel, so installers dispense exactly the length each unit needs with no field connectorization or splicing on the distribution side, cutting per-unit install time across dozens or hundreds of identical drops.
Where does a fiber distribution hub fit in an MDU?
At the building entrance of larger properties: the wall-mount FDH1 (12 to 96 ports) or FDH2 (72 to 288 ports) houses the PON splitters and cross-connect field, so one feeder serves every unit, and technicians activate subscribers by patching rather than splicing.
Can these products be used together as one architecture?
Yes; they are designed as stages of a single chain (entrance, floor distribution, unit demarcation, ONT access), and the entire MDU bill of materials can be specified from one vendor, one part-number system, and one support line.
Because every stage comes from one vendor, the whole upgrade can be specified, quoted, and supported as a single architecture; see the FTTH drop reference architecture for the same chain in single-family deployments.
