What Is a Fiber Entrance Terminal?
A fiber entrance terminal is a weatherproof enclosure at the point where outside-plant (OSP) fiber enters a building or transitions toward the customer premise. It protects the connection between the outdoor drop or distribution fiber and the indoor/customer fiber, providing adapter ports for patching, provisions for splicing, and slack storage — typically in capacities from 4 to 72 fibers for FTTH, FTTB, and MDU installations.
What a fiber entrance terminal does
Outdoor fiber cable is built for weather; indoor and customer fiber is not — and the two must meet somewhere protected, accessible, and serviceable. That’s the entrance terminal’s job. Inside the enclosure, the incoming OSP fiber is either connectorized and patched at adapter ports or spliced to pigtails, and excess fiber is coiled in slack storage so future work has length to spare. The housing itself carries the environmental burden: UV-, chemical-, and temperature-resistant materials, sealed hinged covers, grommeted or conduit cable entries, strain relief, bend-radius control, and often a NEMA-4 rating for exposed pole or wall mounts.
Where it sits in the network
The entrance terminal lives downstream of the distribution hub and upstream of the individual demarcation point: central office → feeder → fiber distribution hub (FDH) → distribution cable → fiber entrance terminal at the building or drop cluster → demarcation/slack-storage enclosure at each premise → customer connection point at the ONT. In an MDU, one entrance terminal often feeds many units; in single-family FTTH, small terminals serve clusters of drops.

The core sizing questions: how many fibers now and at build-out; patch-only or patch-and-splice; whether PON splitting happens here or upstream at the FDH; mounting (wall, pole) and exposure (NEMA rating); and connector standard (SC-APC is the FTTH default; LC doubles density).
Fiber entrance terminal vs. related enclosures
- vs. fiber distribution hub: the FDH splits and cross-connects for a whole serving area; the entrance terminal handles the building- or cluster-level transition downstream of it.
- vs. demarcation enclosure / fiber interface device: the demarc (like the Tii 506F) is the per-premise handoff between provider and customer fiber; the entrance terminal typically aggregates multiple drops upstream of those handoffs.
- vs. splice closure: closures are sealed, permanent joints; entrance terminals are re-enterable and connectorized for ongoing service work.
