How to Install the Tii 506R Reeled Fiber Distribution Unit

Quick answer: Mount the 506R vertically, feed the OSP drop through the left grommet, terminate or splice the 900 µm fiber, seat and connect the SC connector, re-mount the reel, dispense the pre-connectorized distribution fiber to length through the right grommet — pulling only by the black jacket, never the connector — then lock the reel and secure the cover.

Caution: Always pull the distribution cable by the black jacket — never pull on the SC connector. Install in a manner that complies with applicable national and local safety codes.

The 506R Fiber Interface Device provides demarcation between the OSP fiber drop and customer distribution fiber. The unit ships preloaded with connectorized fiber on a rotating reel for distribution into the home, facilitating fast FTTH deployment.

Installation steps

  1. Mount the unit. Mount the 506R vertically on a flat surface using one of: internal screws through the 4 internal mounting holes (covered by punch-through plastic film preserving environmental integrity — remove the reel assembly and reel mounting plate first to access them); external screws through the top and bottom mounting ears; or pole straps on the external ears.
  2. Free the cable. The assembly ships with the cable passed through the grommet. If the unit has a pull sock, remove the tape holding its end; otherwise continue.
  3. Remove the reel assembly. Loosen the center screw and pull the reel outward — do not remove the screw.
  4. Enter the drop cable. Punch a hole through the left cable entry grommet, guide the drop cable through, and cut it leaving at least 1 meter of slack inside the unit.
  5. Strip the cable. Mark the cable just above the strength member clamp and strip the jacket at this point, exposing the internal 900 µm fiber.
  6. Clamp the cable. Secure the jacketed cable using the strength member clamp.
  7. Ground (if applicable). Connect a tracer wire, if used, to the internal ground stud; connect AC safety ground to the external ground stud.
  8. Terminate or splice. Field-terminate or splice the 900 µm fiber per standard company practice; 3 mm splice sleeve holders are provided on the lower plate.
  9. Route and connect. Route and secure the 900 µm fiber slack clockwise, and plug the SC connector into the provided SC adapter.
  10. Re-seat the reel. Snap the reel into the lower plate and partially tighten the central screw, still allowing the reel to rotate.
  11. Dispense distribution fiber. Install the right grommet with the cable passed through, then dispense and route the desired amount of cable. Always pull the cable by the black jacket — never by the SC connector. The pull sock can be removed at any time by releasing its tape.
  12. Set tension and lock. Adjust final cable tension by hand-rotating the reel, tighten the center screw to lock the reel, and secure the distribution fiber with a tie wrap.
  13. Store excess and connect. Route excess fiber on top of the reel under the slack retention fingers, remove the dust cap, and plug the SC connector into the top of the SC adapter.
  14. Close. Close and secure the cover by tightening the hex screw until snug — do not over-tighten.
