How Much Slack Storage Does an FTTH Demarc Need?

Direct answer: Plan for 25–50 feet of stored customer-drop slack at a single-family FTTH demarcation point, and 50–100 feet where pre-connectorized flat drop must be stored at full excess length [V1][V2]. Enough slack should remain to re-terminate the drop twice and to relocate the ONT entry point without pulling new cable.

Why store slack at the demarc at all?

Slack is insurance against a truck roll. Stored drop cable lets a technician re-terminate a damaged connector, move the point of entry when a customer renovates, or recover from a splice failure — all without replacing the drop from the pole or pedestal. With pre-connectorized drops, cable comes in fixed lengths, so whatever the span doesn’t consume must be stored somewhere; an enclosure with proper slack management stores it at a safe bend radius instead of leaving coils exposed on the wall.

Bend radius is the constraint that matters

Slack only protects the network if it is stored above the cable’s minimum bend radius.
