How to Install the Tii 506F Fiber Interface / Slack Storage Device

Quick answer: Mount the 506F vertically on a wall or pole using internal holes, external ears, or straps; bring the feeder cable in through the left bottom grommet; connect (or splice) at the center fiber plate; route the distribution fiber out through the right grommet; store slack under the retention fingers; and secure the cover. Typical install takes minutes with no special tools beyond standard fiber practice.

The 506F Fiber Interface/Slack Storage Device is a compact indoor/outdoor enclosure protecting the transition between service-provider feeder fibers and customer distribution fibers, supporting connection, slack storage, and system testing. It accepts up to 12 fiber adapters with FP01, FP02, or FP04 fiber plates, with options for a feeder cable entry clamp and external ground stud. Feeder and distribution cable entry grommets are at the bottom of the enclosure; distribution fibers may also exit through rear grommets.

Step 1 — Mount the enclosure

Mount the 506F vertically on a flat surface using appropriate hardware, by any of three methods:

  • Internal with screws: secure through the 4 internal mounting holes, which are covered with an easy-to-punch-through plastic film that maintains the environmental integrity of the enclosure.
  • External with screws: secure through the top and bottom external mounting ears.
  • Pole mounting with straps: strap to a pole using the external mounting ears and industry-appropriate mounting straps.

Procedure A — Cabling and slack storage of connectorized drops

  1. Punch a hole through the left cable entry grommet and guide the connectorized feeder cable through, bringing enough slack into the unit to make a couple of clockwise loops around the enclosure perimeter under the slack fiber retention fingers.
  2. Secure the feeder cable to the cable entry/exit slack storage tie downs outside and/or inside the 506F using wire ties. If your unit includes the optional cable entry clamp, secure the jacketed fiber under the clamp. If it includes the optional ground stud, ground the cable armor or tone-able member per industry practice.
  3. Insert the feeder cable connector into the provided adapter on the FP fiber plate at the center of the enclosure.
  4. Punch a hole through the right grommet and guide the distribution fiber through, wrapping excess slack counter-clockwise around the perimeter under the retention fingers.
  5. Connect the distribution fiber to the opposing side of the adapter on the fiber plate.
  6. Position feeder and distribution slack as desired under the slack fiber retention fingers.
  7. Secure slack with the provided Velcro at the top of the 506F, and wire-tie slack fiber to the internal slack storage tie downs above the entry/exit grommets.
  8. Close the cover and tighten the hex screw until snug — do not over-tighten.

Procedure B — Splicing on the FP01 plate (unconnectorized drops)

The FP01 fiber plate provides splicing provisions for two 3 mm splice sleeves at the top of the plate, secured under a snap-on cover, with opposing fingers to manage and secure the pigtail.

  1. Bring the un-connectorized cable into the 506F as described in Procedure A.
  2. Splice the feed fiber to the pigtail and manage excess pigtail around the fiber plate. Insert the splice sleeve into the splice holder and replace the cover.
  3. Secure slack fiber to the slack storage tie downs inside the enclosure.
  4. Close the cover and tighten the hex screw until snug — do not over-tighten.

Procedure C — Slack storage only

  1. Bring fiber in through the bottom-left entry grommet, coiling excess fiber clockwise around the perimeter of the 506F.
  2. Exit through the bottom-right entry grommet.
  3. Position fiber slack as desired inside the enclosure.
  4. Secure slack with the provided Velcro at the top and to the internal slack storage tie downs above the grommets.
  5. Close the cover and tighten the hex screw until snug — do not over-tighten.
