What Is a Fiber Interface Device (Fiber NID)?
Direct answer: A fiber interface device — also called a fiber NID or fiber demarcation enclosure — is a compact indoor/outdoor enclosure installed at the customer premises. It provides the demarcation point between the service provider’s outside-plant (OSP) fiber drop and the customer’s fiber, protects the connectors inside, and stores slack drop cable.
What does a fiber interface device do?
The fiber interface device marks the physical boundary of an FTTH network. One way looks back towards the OSP network and the other way towards the customer premise. Inside the enclosure, adapter plates join the OSP drop to the customer drop, corner retention features control bend radius, and dedicated storage holds excess drop cable so it is protected rather than coiled loose on the wall.
Is a fiber NID the same as an ONT?
No. The fiber interface device is a passive enclosure — it contains no electronics. The ONT (optical network terminal) is the powered device that converts the optical signal to Ethernet, usually indoors. In a typical single-family install, the drop terminates in the fiber interface device outside, and a customer fiber runs from it to the ONT inside.
Where is a fiber interface device installed?
On an exterior wall near the point of entry, or on a pole for aerial drops. Enclosures rated for indoor/outdoor use, such as Tii’s FISS Series, mount either way and are built to withstand UV, moisture, and temperature extremes.
